PRIMARY MUSIC EDUCATION

Creating Music In All Australian Schools

The Australian Keyboard Academy agrees with the 2005 National Review of Music Education that, "all students should have the opportunity to learn music regardless of their socio-economic status, and all Australian Schools are capable of supporting effective learning in music. Also more needs to be done to ensure music creativity and music technology is actively included in the curriculum."

Our goal is for all Australian Schools to deliver a comprehensive creative music program. To achieve this, we will assist Primary Schools provide music education for all Australian children by way of:

1. Developing strategies and innovative approaches in funding and resources;

2. Working together with generalist and specialist music teachers to implement and develop a sequential creative music program that incorporates singing from K-6;

3. Provide curriculum support materials and resources;

4. Provide Professional Development for teachers in music technology and creativity;

5. Assist to implement keyboard laboratories in schools and on-going support and training for teachers; and,

6. Provide curriculum materials supporting music creativity, composition, and improvisation.

The Australian Keyboard Academy believes it is vital that Schools become more committed and involved in the delivery of music education, because according to research cited in the 2005 National Review of Music Education:

"Outsourcing instrumental music tuition is an option for some schools. As with those teaching music within school systems and sectors, maintaining quality of teaching is an issue within out-sourced provision of instrumental music services" (Pascoe et al; 2005:126).

The review continues to indicate that, children who start learning a musical instrument during K-6 and give up are less likely to take up music studies during their secondary school years. It is vital that the best possible creative music education is made available for all Australian children and delivered by qualified teachers.

The Australian Keyboard Academy welcomes the opportunity to discuss how music can become a key area of study for all students in your Primary School.
